Compact computing specialist Shuttle has announced a fan-free single-bay Network Attached Storage (NAS) system with integrated Wi-FI hot-spot, the Shuttle OmniNAS KS10.
The KS10 is based around a low-power Marvell 88F6707 ARMv7 system-on-chip (SoC) processor running at 800MHz, which is a major contributor to the passively-cooled design. 256MB of DDR3 memory is included, while the company's Linux-based custom operating system is pre-loaded onto a 1GB NAND flash partition. A gigabit Ethernet connector can be found at the rear alongside a single USB 2.0 port, while a further USB 2.0 port and an SD, SDHC and SDXC card reader is located to the front - both of which support automatic copying to the internal hard drive.
The single 3.5" drive bay officially supports hard drives up to 4TB in size - although Shuttle claims larger drives should work fine, but have yet to be tested - with full support for idle spin-down timing and SMART reporting and diagnostics. It's the wireless functionality that makes the OmniNAS KS10 interesting, though: a built-in 801.11b/g/n radio supports both client and hot-spot modes, allowing users to reduce the number of dedicated devices required on their networks - although, sadly, is limited to the 2.4GHz band and a maximum throughput of 54Mb/s.
As with Shuttle's other OmniNAS products, the KS10's operating system includes the ability to run as a Windows-style SMB server, FTP or Apple file server, supports DLNA and iTunes media streaming, can act as a printer server, comes with a built-in BitTorrent client and includes automatic backup facilities. The fan-free chassis, finished in black plastic, measures 124mm x 60mm x 205mm, and weighs 550g before the hard drive is fitted. The size is kept down via the use of an external laptop-style 19V power adapter, rated to 40W.
